Busy days in Strasbourg for our new MEPs. The new European Parliament gave a pale green light to Ursula von der Leyen and today they will appoint interparliamentary delegations. Who’s there to help them keep pace with this tight agenda? Their legislative and administrative assistants of course! We took a closer look at which countries needed more help than others. During the last EP legislature, for example, Hungary needed an average of 3 assistants per MEP. Finland and Romania follow with an average of 2.91 people.
On the other end of the spectrum, the most “independent” MEPs proved to be the British and the Irish who employed, on average, less than to staffers each.
The newly-elected MEPs are still hiring and, hey, don’t tell anyone, but it seems that the Spanish are still behind in recruiting their support staff! At the end of the previous European Parliament, 123 accredited assistants were on the EP’s payroll for the Spanish delegation but, for now, only 52 people have been hired for the new MEPs.
